From fairy-tale to the Troll figure
The Norwegian storytelling is teeming with goblins, trolls, pixies, elves and subterranean creatures. Our rich heritage of fairy-tales means that we Norwegians have fantastic fold stories in our blood. Some were short and rotund, other giants with several heads. They generally walked barefoot and wore simple clothes, living close to nature. Many of them were friendly with a good-natured twinkle in their eyes. Trolls and other subterranean creatures have also proved a popular motif for Norwegian artists, particularly Theodor Kittelsen from Kragero in Telemark, who brought these creatures to life for us. You could say that they are carrying on tradition. The figures are not drawn from any particular stories. They are created from pure imagination and often inspired by phenomena from our own time. All of our trolls are gentle, kind, magical and utterly harmless, making great gifts for friends and business contacts, as well as marvellous collectibles and souvenirs. Ny Form Trolls are also popular in displays and designs for an imaginative presentation of Norwegian or Nordic culture.
In the old days trolls were created by word of mouth from a fertile imagination. Imagination and creativity are still vital, but now the trolls are made of clay. Our design department is staffed by Sven Schulze, a 40 year veteran of troll production, and Brynhild Lysobakk, who has 12 year’s experience. Today they are manufactured by Flaarønning as in Norway.
Once the original models are ready and the designers are happy, a number of complicated moulds have to be made in rubber and plaster. These form the basic for the many art and craft operations in our various departments.
Precise and skilful hands create fairy tales
Everything is done by hand, from processing raw materials to the end of product. Production is environmentally friendly as the figures are mainly made of natural materials such as clay, chalk and rubber. Each troll is cast in multi-sectional mould and the dried, polished and painted. Next, the trolls are given their final coat of paint, applied by airbrush and spray, before each troll is furnished with easy, hair, tail and other accessories. Every troll has its own personality and no two are exactly alike. Finally the figures go through a rigorous quality control procedure and are packaged before it let out into the world.
