These figures are an innovation from Flaaronning. They won the artist Grethe Johanne Selbak Solemslokk to develop these figures. Grethe was trained in Florence and New York. In addition to the fine arts, she has worked with porcelain, earthenware and gold ornaments. In 1992 she had the honor to illustrate the book cover to Nelson Mandela's book. This Gammel Nissen are Grethes own creations from its "fairy world". They are easily recognizable by his long beard and big pants. Gammelnisse are very very old (Gammel = norway, english = old), at least 200 years. Therefore, the skin is a bit wrinkled. They have a round, thick trousers due to long hours of sitting. With the animals they do not have much in mind. There are actually more the craft artists. At night, they often repair things or clean up. All things the farmer has not managed, they do it with thumb turn and a little magic. Especially for Christmas Nisse expect a big bowl of porridge and home-brewed beer in return for their activities.
