How the Longtails got their tails
Have you ever wandered deep into the Norwegian woods, where the moss is damp and emerald green, where the trees are so tall that you can barely see the tops and where the lakes are mysterious polished mirrors on the landscape. Then, you can be sure that you are being watched, that curious eyes follow your every step. It’s probably only the animals you think, when you get the strange feeling that someone is looking at you. Of course, it’s the animals. Only, it’s not the animals that whisper and pad about you hidden by stumps, tussocks and trees. You’re in the trolls' domain now.
Trolls have been in the Norwegian woods and mountains since the beginning of time. There are many kinds of troll: large, small, cruel, sweet, nasty and friendly. But for the most part trolls are kind creatures that don’t cause much fuss. This story is about small, friendly trolls just like this - the Longtail trolls. The Longtail trolls don’t like to be reminded, but once upon a time they didn’t have long tails. In fact, all they had was a pitiful little stump, which they were extremely embarrassed about, for as everyone knows any troll worth his salt has a proper, nice looking tail. So how did it come to pass that the Longtail trolls got their long, stylish tails?
Well, the story goes that once there was a little troll who was on the way home after a working trip into the mountains, where the trolls dug out their treasure. But when he was nearly home he met a man in the woods. The little troll was scared and hid in a little tree stump. Unfortunately - or perhaps fortunately, there were several little knotholes in the stump, so that the trolls, little stumpy tail stuck out of one. The man had traveled far that evening and needed to rest, so he sat down and leaned his back against the tree stump where the troll was hidden - right on the troll’s tail! The troll grew quite frantic - because with the man sitting on his tail he was stuck fast. Fortunately the man was tired and fell asleep. So the troll took his chance and using every bit of strength he possessed he levered himself against the tree stump and pulled with all his might. But his tail was stuck fast under the man and didn’t budge. Finally the troll gave an almighty heave and with a little plopping noise his tail came lose. The troll sprang over the top of the stump and tumbled onto the ground and away. It was then that the troll noticed that his tail had stretched! He was so happy that he jumped up and down on the spot. In fact he was so grateful that he took a couple of golden nuggets out of his pockets and placed them on the floor next to the man. Then he ran all the way home to show all the other trolls his fine new tail. And that’s how the Longtail trolls got their fine, long tails.
