How the trolls came to be?

Everyone knows that trolls have existed since the dawn of time. But haven’t you ever wondered when the dawn of time actually was? And how the trolls came to be? The trolls’ coming into existence is a well-kept secret, so you must promise never to tell anyone…
Many millions of years ago, when the earth was still untouched by human feet and only the animals lived out in the wilds, in a country far, far north, beautiful northern lights blazed over the heavens each evening. The northern lights shone over the night sky in dazzling colours such as greens, reds, whites, blues and orange, but there was no-one there to see it. There were no people yet, and the animals slept at night, so there was not a soul to gaze on and admire the dazzling, coloured spectacle of the beautiful northern lights.
The northern lights grew sad, and shone sorrowfully down on the earth.

- Why do I give the world my dazzling display of colours every night, when there’s no-one there to see it? wondered the northern lights. In its loneliness the northern lights shone over the heavens, and the colours eventually dimmed to grey. Then one evening the northern lights decided to create its own audience. The thought that someone would at long last see its beautiful display, made the northern lights sparkle with colours, and some of these flew down toward the earth. Some sparks of colour were small, others big; and everywhere these dashes of colour landed – a troll was formed. Everywhere throughout the narrow country in the north, trolls popped up from tussocks, mountains and valleys, and each and every one of them stood and gazed in awe at the dazzlingly colourful northern lights that had created them with its magical beauty.
And that’s how the trolls came to be – created during the night by the northern lights, which after thousands of years of loneliness finally got its awestruck audience. This is why so many trolls can only come out at night, because that’s when the northern lights appear. So if you see the northern lights on a quiet winter's night, you can be pretty sure that you’re not the only one there, gazing up at the colours in the night sky…
